Spencer Alexis: Another One Bites The Dust

August 16, 2009

Well, I knew this was coming but I wasn’t supposed to say anything until it was official: Spencer Alexis is no longer.

Now, I know a lot of my customers did not like Spencer Alexis but for every customer I had who hated it I had 10 who loved it.

I don’t know the whole story behind the demise of Spencer Alexis all I know is another manufacturer who did plus sizes is no longer.

For those of you who don’t know: Spencer Alexis started out only doing plus sizes and eventually expanded into Missy and Petite sizes.  I can’t help but think that maybe that was part of the problem – but you know, there is this myth out there that plus size women are more apt to buy a brand that is made for all sizes, that she doesn’t want to buy a “plus size brand”.

Now, maybe that’s true for like 5% of the women I know but for the other 95% – if it is attractive, if it is good quality and reasonably priced they won’t care if it’s “only a plus size” brand they will buy it.

I just happened upon your website recently — and I love it! Finally, someone with style and taste and who appreciates beautiful fabric and finishing! Thank you!

Another designer that you might want to find – Ming Wang Knits. I happened upon this line at Dillards in Kansas City – very similar in quality to Misook but less expensive. Dillards does not carry this designer on their website. I believe Von Maur (another midwest store that is also online) carries them on their website also although their items are very basic black. Dillards also carries the line “Nygard” – again – nice quality clothing for larger sizes.

Kohl’s is now carrying the Dana Buchman line in larger sizes — but – believe me — the quality is not there – and they are not cheap – compared to the other large size clothing at Kohl’s.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for the encouraging comment and the tips about Ming Wang and Dana Buchman know being at Kohl’s, Ann! I figured it was just a matter of time before someone knocked off Misook at a cheaper price point. Thank you again and enjoy the site.
